On December 20, 2005, 1st Lt. Michael J. Cleary was killed in the town of Taji, Iraq. Michael was 24 years old; he was due to return home to his family and fiance ten days later.

Michael's best friend and college roommate, Jon Bellona, was devastated by Mikey's death. Jon conceived of the idea for Run for the Fallen: a team of runners would relay across America, one mile to honor each service member who has been killed in the Iraq war.

The core team, comprised of Mikey's fiance, sister and friends, began their 4,000+ mile journey at Fort Irwin, CA on June 14 and finished at Arlington National Cemetery, VA on August 24. This is their story as well as the story of people they met along the way - those who have lost their own Mikey and participated in this moving memorial.
